Japan's aging society
Twenty percent of Japanese, or 25.56 million people, were aged 65 or older as of Thursday, up 0.5 point from a year earlier, government statistics showed Sunday.
The ratio of those 65 or older in the overall population stood at 4.9% in 1950 and rose gradually to 10.3% in 1985. During the 20 years since then, it went up rapidly to reach the 20% line this year for the first time, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
Monday was a national holiday in Japan, dedicated to "Respect for the Elderly.
